I have been following Alicia Souza right from the beginning when she started posting her “OMG-I-love-her-illustrations” on Facebook. Over the years, like a proud and loyal fan, I saw her fan-following explode. And the best part, despite bazillion emails that she might get every day, she will still respond to any silly (ref. ‘Would you prefer to answer my five questions?’) messages she gets even now.
Q1. If you were to compare yourself with one of the characters from F.R.I.E.N.D.S., who would you pick and why?
Umm… maybe Phoebe, perhaps. I’m not even sure why! But I can totally make up a song about my ‘smelly dog’!
Q2. One loss you still haven’t come to terms with?
My dog Cookie-Brown. I’ve come to terms with it, but even though it was many years ago, it still seems recent.
Q3. How do you overcome an illustrator’s block?
I think doing something different, other than illustrating, can overcome illustrator’s block. My day starts early, with walking Charlie and the rest of the day is a jumble of mailing, drawing, researching, invoicing, planning, ideating and sometimes meeting clients and ends with me cooking dinner and drawing for the next day.
Q4. The biggest OMG moment of 2016 (or even 2017)?
I think the one that happened more recently is the launch of our 2017 color-in Postcard and note calendar and the response to it. Kind of blew me away!
Q5. One of your most favorite and personal illustrations and why?
I don’t think I have a favorite but everything by Quentin Blake makes me smile.
